Air-to-water heat pumps are systems that use ambient air as a heat source to heat a working medium (water or glycol). Heat extracted from ambient air at a lower energy level can be upgraded to a higher energy level by consuming electrical energy, which is required to operate the compressor and other electrical components.

Frigo Plus heat pumps use the natural refrigerant R290 (propane), which has an exceptionally low global warming potential GWP < 1. This natural refrigerant has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0). Accordingly, it is exempt from the restrictions imposed by F-Gas legislation, namely Regulation (EU) 2024/573 on fluorinated greenhouse gases.

Reversible air-to-water heat pumps are characterized by their ability to reverse the operating process, switching from heating to cooling mode and vice versa. Reversibility is achieved by changing the direction of refrigerant flow within the unit using a four-way valve. Depending on outdoor weather conditions or system demands, the user can switch or reverse the operating mode. It is important to note that air-to-water heat pumps also utilize the reversible process for defrosting the air heat exchangers during heating operation.

Heat pumps can also be designed exclusively for heating purposes. In such configurations, process reversal is still available but solely for the purpose of defrosting the air heat exchangers (evaporator). The defrosting process is managed by the unit’s main controller.
